Coastal Carolina University
The Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers are located in Conway, SC. The Chanticleers compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Sun Belt Conference. Coastal Carolina recently joined the Sun Belt Conference after being a member of the Big South Conference since its formation in 1983.
Originally known as the Trojans until the early 1960s, some supporters wanted a mascot similar to the Gamecock due to the school's affiliation with the University of South Carolina. However, the decision was made to adopt the Chanticleers, named after the proud and witty rooster featured in "The Nun’s Priest’s Tale" in Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. The Chanticleers' mascot, Chauncey, carries on this legacy.
