Coastal Carolina University
The Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers are located in Conway, SC. The Chanticleers participate at the Division I level of the NCAA in the Sunbelt Conference. Coastal Carolina recently joined the Sunbelt Conference having been members of the Big South Conference since the leagues formation in 1983. The Chanticleers were known as the Trojans until the early 1960s, after their affiliation with the University of South Carolina some were pulling for a mascot that was more along the lines of the Gamecock, but the decision was made to go with the Chanticleers. Named after the proud witty rooster who was made famous in “The Nun’s Priest’s Tale” in Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, the Chanticleers mascot is known as Chauncey.
