Thorough Testing

Testing.jpgFields can play a significant role in supporting athlete safety during practice and play. Our systems are designed to provide safety as well as performance benefits for athletes by achieving the right balance of firm, fast and safe surfaces. In addition to shock attenuation (which can help prevent injuries from tackles, trips and falls), our fields are designed to combine low gMax levels with the foot stability and force reduction (lower extremity protection) values in the range of high-quality natural grass.

Our turf products are engineered to meet rigorous performance and safety standards such as the FIFA Quality Concept, a world-class standard that guarantees maximum performance and quality. In the Shaw Sports Turf lab, a state-of-the-art laboratory with indoor and outdoor field surface testing, our turf is put through the rigors of athlete/surface and ball/surface tests that measure our products against the benchmark of perfectly manicured natural turf. It’s also challenged under stresses and impacts that extend far beyond the demands of normal use.

HydroChill

In addition to foot stability and shock attenuation, controlling the heat on the field surface contributes to the comfort and performance of athletes. Our new, state-of-the-art field evaporative cooling system, HydroChill™, uses moisture to provide a long-term cooling effect. Depending upon local conditions, rainfall, dew, or irrigation can keep the field cool for days.

With thermocouple field test results showing 50°F lower surface temperatures compared to standard synthetic turf, HydroChill lets athletes focus on the task, not the temperature.

Shock Pads

Shock pads provide additional safety and performance benefits, including shock attenuation, which can help prevent injuries from tackles, trips and falls throughout the season. Shock pads are highly elastic and provide great shock absorption. The system deforms very little at the point of impact but effectively spreads the impact over a larger area, creating a stable platform for the athlete—balancing performance and safety without having to sacrifice one for the other. A proper pad system will yield a g-max level lower than 100 (safety) yet have vertical deformation (foot stability) and force reduction (lower extremity protection) values in range of high quality grass.
 

GeoFill

GeoFill, our environmentally friendly infield system, provides natural footing and support without the mess and instability of dirt. A great environmental infill alternative, GeoFill allows for clean water runoff, is recyclable and is naturally resistant to mold and fungus.

Engineered for traction and performance, GeoFill provides a stable surface for the athlete by preventing infill shifts and flyout, and excels in critical ball to surface interactions such as ball roll and ball bounce. GeoFill systems are naturally cooler due to the fact that the composition of materials holds in moisture.

Crumb Rubber Safety


Crumb rubber is one of the many infill options Shaw provides customers. Shaw has followed closely the numerous scientific studies on the safety of synthetic turf and crumb rubber conducted by federal and state agencies. These studies have consistently confirmed the safety of synthetic turf athletic fields using crumb rubber. Most recently, Shaw proactively retained Dr. Laura C. Green, a noted toxicologist, to evaluate through a review of the existing research the claims raised in the media. Dr. Green’s report states:
“I find no reliable basis for the notion that crumb rubber in-filled synthetic turf fields pose a significant risk of cancer. Several groups of investigators, from academia, government, and consulting firms have performed environmental monitoring and/or modeling studies of crumb rubber and synthetic turf fields, and have reached the same conclusion.”

The following are some of the highlights of Dr. Green’s report:
  • There is no reliable evidence to indicate that the reported cases of cancer in soccer players constitute an actual cancer cluster, since no reports have been made regarding the ages, sexes, or races of the individuals, the particular diseases at issue, the number of cases expected in any given population, or the particular exposures of the group.

  • The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has investigated more than 100 cancer clusters, many of them involving children, and has never found an environmental cause. Instead, these clusters appear to arise due to chance.
  • The type of leukemia most prevalent in childhood (namely acute lymphocytic leukemia – ALL), all types of lymphomas, and brain tumors are not known to be caused by cigarette smoking. Since smoking does not cause these cancers, it is highly unlikely that the small exposures to chemicals from synthetic turf athletic fields could do so.
  • Lymphomas are not known to be caused by environmental exposures to chemicals.
  • The leukemia most prevalent in children (ALL) is not known to be caused by environmental exposures to chemicals.
  • No type of cancer in adolescents is known to be caused by exposure to chemicals.
  • Scientific studies have shown that the quality of outdoor air in contact with synthetic turf athletic fields is not materially different from outdoor air in general.
