SHERWOOD, Arkansas - Sylvan Hills High School is installing a new Shaw Sports Turf playing surface on Bill Blackwood Field at Bears Stadium.
The school, which previously played on natural grass, made the decision to change to an artificial playing surface for several reasons.
“We are making other improvements around campus, but we wanted to start with the stadium,” said Tracy Allen, Principal at the school. “It’s the most visible part of our campus.”
Allen, who is a 1990 graduate of Sylvan Hills, said that the stadium has not been updated in many years and the field offers the opportunity to make an impact in the community. He also said there are practical reasons for the change.
“I remember two years ago, it rained nearly every Friday night,” he said. “The new Shaw Sports Turf field gives us the opportunity to play on a safe, consistent surface that is not affected by the weather.”
The school’s football and soccer teams will use the new field, as well as the band and other student groups. Additionally, Allen said the field provides opportunities to generate additional revenue by providing usage of the field to community groups.
The new playing surface will feature Shaw Sports Turf’s Classic system. Fast, dense and firm, Classic is a premium high performance synthetic turf system designed with Tapeslide XP fiber to maximize player performance and speed. Classic is designed to be exceptionally durable to meet the demands of high-use fields.
“We did our research when selecting the turf system we would install,” said Allen. “We were very impressed with Shaw Sports Turf. Their reputation, along with the volume and quality of their installations made it clear that they offered the best product out there today and the best playing surface for our kids.”
Shaw Sports Turf provided the practice and game fields for the University of Arkansas. The company is also installing fields at several Arkansas high schools, including Bentonville, Cabot, North Little Rock, and Pulaski Academy.
"We've experienced tremendous growth in Arkansas this year," said Wynn Vinson, Territory Manager for Shaw Sports Turf. "We couldn't be happier that the Sylvan Hills Bears have chosen Shaw Sports Turf as their playing surface."
The Bears will play their first game on the new Shaw Sports Turf field on September 19 against Newport.
