CALHOUN, Georgia - Shaw Sports Turf, a division of Shaw Industries, has announced a program to divert used synthetic turf from the landfill each time the company is part of a sports field replacement project.
The program repurposes and reuses turf that has completed its life cycle on the sports field into other productive uses, such as part of beautification projects, landscaping, pet turf and batting cages.
Shaw Sports Turf has diverted 1.5 million pounds of turf and infill from the landfill already this year and looks to make an even more significant impact now that it has formalized this program. Each reclamation project stands to divert hundreds of thousands of pounds of material from the landfill.
“This program provides another benefit to synthetic turf, which does not require watering, fertilizing or mowing – saving millions of gallons of water every year,” notes Chris Small, director of specialty projects for Shaw Sports Turf. “By extending the life of the product and diverting it from the landfill, we’re providing our customers with a more sustainable solution when they are ready to renovate their facilities.”
The effort aligns with Shaw’s holistic approach to sustainability and expands upon its expansive carpet reclamation and recycling efforts.
“Our company-wide sustainability approach includes identifying ways to keep the products we manufacture in the economy longer,” states Paul Murray, vice president of sustainability and environmental affairs at Shaw Industries. “One facet of that effort is to look for new uses for materials that may have historically been seen as waste.”
