University of North Texas
UNT's mascot, the American eagle, was adopted on February 1, 1922. The intercollegiate athletics nickname "The Mean Green" now in its fiftieth year, was adopted by fans and media in 1966 for the North Texas football defensive squad that finished the season second in the nation against the rush. That season, Joe Greene, then a sophomore at North Texas, played left defensive tackle on the football team. Joe Greene did not get his nickname "Mean Joe Greene" while at the University, but after he was already in the pros; however UNT enjoys the novelty of being associated with the nickname.
