Houston ISD
Houston Independent School District (HISD) is the largest public school district in Texas and the seventh-largest in the United States. HISD serves as the school district for most of the city of Houston.
In 2005, HISD enrolled evacuees from areas affected by Hurricane Katrina who had relocated to Houston. The Houston Astrodome, which served as a shelter for evacuees, is located within the HISD boundaries. By the start of the 2006-2007 school year, approximately 2,900 Hurricane Katrina evacuees were still enrolled in HISD schools.
As a member of the University Interscholastic League (UIL), HISD supports 23 high school football teams that play across five football stadiums.
