GREENSBORO, North Carolina - Kids at the Greensboro, North Carolina Boys and Girls Club will now be able to play on a field made by Shaw Sports Turf, thanks to the Kevin Harvick Foundation and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation.
The Youth Development Park is being funded by foundation started by NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick and his wife DeLana. The field, which will open in 2015, will be the 40th such park built by the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. The charity is on a mission to construct 50 such fields by the end of 2015.
The park will be located in an underserved community and the synthetic turf field, manufactured by Shaw Sports Turf, will be used for soccer, baseball, flag football, and lacrosse. The Kevin Harvick Foundation and Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation are teaming up to provide the Greensboro Boys & Girls Club with a "field of dreams" for generations to come.
The Kevin Harvick Foundation, established in 2010 by NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kevin Harvick and his wife, DeLana, is funding the construction of the Kevin Harvick Youth Development Park in Greensboro, N.C. The multi-purpose sports complex, scheduled to open in 2015, marks the 40th facility built by the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation for use by Boys & Girls Clubs across the country. The park, to be located in an underserved community, features a synthetic-surface, outdoor field suitable for soccer, baseball, flag football and lacrosse.
"The Kevin Harvick Foundation is honored to help further the legacy of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation in our own backyard in Greensboro," Kevin Harvick said. "Years ago, DeLana and I made helping underprivileged children a priority, and the Ripken family is of the same mindset. Whether in the NASCAR or baseball community, much of what we do revolves around our passion for children. I can't thank Mark Butler (Chairman of the Board of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation and President and CEO of Ollie's Bargain Outlet) enough for introducing Cal Jr. and me. Ours has been a great partnership in a number of ways, and this is only the beginning."
"I am thrilled that Kevin (Harvick) has decided to join our board of directors and get so involved with the foundation," Cal Ripken, Jr. said. "His commitment to children and to his community is fantastic, and I am excited to work with him in the years ahead. Kevin is not only a tremendous athlete, but he uses the platform that racing has provided him to give back in a real and significant way."
The two charitable organizations are not only building a field, they will work closely with the Boys and Girls Club on health and safety initiative for the kids, as well as programs which foster discipline, self-respect, and achievement in school, athletics, and life.
Shaw Sports Turf of Dalton, Georgia, manufactures the fields for the Youth Development Parks initiative. The goal of the Youth Development Park initiative is to develop several unique, multi-purpose, low maintenance fields with synthetic turf that will provide a cohesive recreational and educational experience for underserved young people across the United States. Upon completion of the project, the parks are gifted to a trusted youth-serving organization or local municipality so the children have access, ownership, and pride for their park.
“The Ripken name is associated with excellence, and Shaw Sports Turf is a world-class manufacturer with those same values,” said Steve Salem, president of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. “Working together, we will be able to provide top-quality, safe environments for at-risk youth and communities in-need throughout the country.”
“We use baseball as a hook to get in front of kids and help build character and teach critical life lessons,” said Ripken, Jr. “Allowing kids to play on world-class fields like those made by Shaw Sports Turf just makes it easier to accomplish that mission.”
